To fully appreciate the
history of the "Grandfather" Clock, one must travel into the fantastic
realm of British superstition. You see, before the late 1870's, these enormous
time pieces were
known primarily as "floor clocks"; but two English brothers and
an American songwriter
would soon change that forever.
The Brothers Jenkins owned
a hotel in North Yorkshire in which they kept an unusual
floor clock. It was unusual in that it kept very accurate time
(in an age when not very many clocks did).
However, with the death
of the first Jenkins brother, the clock began to lose time... irreparably.
Then, with the death of the second brother, it stopped altogether. After that,
the clock was
simply left in place; a token of the hotel's haunted past.
While traveling through
North Yorkshire, an American songwriter, Henry Work
heard this tale and composed a song:
Oh, my grandfather's
clock was too tall for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor.
It was taller by a half than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more!
From then on, floor clocks were known as Grandfather Clocks; though- ironically-
not in Europe, where the name was inspired!
A common question that
arises from this is, "So, what is a Grandmother Clock?" Was
there an
English hotel owned by two sisters? No! Grandmother Clock
is a name typically associated
with shorter (77" and below), pinched-waist Grandfather Clocks.
Most commonly, these are found in a cherry finish.
Now, there are many stories
out there about how Grandfathers got their names.
This may be the story that we subscribe to, but that does not mean they
do not all
have some grain of truth. We hope you enjoyed the story!
